                           Township History

The information below was obtained in the book titled "History of Livingston County" , whose Author is Franklin Ellis.

                     The Origination of the Township

Marion Township was formed in1837, by an act of the State Legislature on March 11, 1837. The Township started as a part of Putnam Township.

By the original United States survey, is was designated as township No 2 north, of the base line of range No 4 cast of the principal meridian.

The present name of the Township was originally suggested by a Resident who had formerly resided in Marion, Wayne County, New York. It was actually derived from General Francis Marion. He was an American officer who gained celebrity and distinction during the war of the Revolution. He was known as "Swamp Fox of the Carolinas".
